Hey, when I say minor niggles and glitches, I really mean minor niggles and glitches. ;)

Examples include a somewhat aesthetically jarring change in themes from grub to the KDM. The menu editor doesn't work properly. Little things like that. Things that are not show-stoppers by any means; just a lack of polish.

Actually, the most serious problem I've run into happened last night. The Plasma desktop crashed, taking kwin with it. I got dropped back all the way to KDM. And when I re-logged in, many of my application settings/defaults were wiped out, including my Firefox bookmarks! I got to spend about half-an-hour rebuilding my desktop to how I wanted it. To be honest about that one, though, I probably did it to myself. I had been playing in the KDE Control Center, mucking about with paths, and I imagine I screwed one (or more) up.

So, you say, "First, let me say that KDE4 on PCLOS is not 100% ready for the masses. While I haven’t seen anything major, there are some niggles and glitches here and there."

But since you mention NONE of the niggles and glitches, the comment is rather worthless. I would like to know what niggles and glitches you experienced.

By the way, I have experienced more niggles and glitches (apps freezing, desktop freezing) in KDE3 than kde4.

So, what niggles?? Do tell...

Thanks.

You have a point. I found *1* - noobs. And I found *1* - repos only updated at release. I just failed to put 1 + 1 together to get *2* - A noob needs somebody to help them get the latest software if the repos don't get updated.

I'm an ex PCLinuxOS user, now using Ubuntu (On the grounds that it is the only distro to support my graphics card AND my wireless network card). I think part of the reason for this (especially when paired with the common Linux = Ubuntu attitude you mentioned here) is that Ubuntu is terrible for updating their repos.

If I want say, Firefox 3.5 on my ubuntu system, which has 9.04, the latest version, my choices are:

* Install the firefox-3.5 package in the repos which last I checked was 3.5 RC2 NOT the stable release. This is when Firefox 3.5.1 had just came out.
* Install a PPA. This is confusing for some users. I'm still not 100% sure how they work myself, just that they do.
* Find a .deb to download (haven't seen any).
* Uninstall Ubuntu's Firefox, and install Mozilla's build. (Option I went with, and encountered a few issues. Fixable, but not easy).

When is the final version of 3.5 going to be in ubuntu's repos as the firefox package? Next release.

This is repeated accross many packages. Want the latest version of eclipse? Do it yourself. Apache? Do it yourself. PHP? Do it yourself.

Also, which Linux users are most likely to need these tutorials? The noobs. Which ones are going to be using Ubuntu? The noobs. So 90% of these articles would be completely obsolete, IF Ubuntu updated it's repos. As it is, I'm guessing their policy is security updates only between releases.

The advantages of Linux outweigh the cons any day.

Windows is loosing it's game support also. Some big name graphic cards are turning to open source. mmmmmhhmmm

I find Windows slow, annoying, made for stupid people and a free country for every virus within 20 feet.

Thats right that Linux almost never crashes. Linux almost never crashes, a few programs do every once in a while. The difference between Linux and Windows when it comes to the crashing problem is that: When one program seizes up the Linux OS is still usable unlike Wintendos which gets you jamming the power button after 5 minutes of waiting.

Why do I hate Windows:
1. It freezes up - Linux barely ever does, even on a small computer
2. It had 20 years to fix some simple problems(security, performance etc.), after all that time it still sucks.
3. It not dependable, it even crashes for Bill Gates when at conferences

just my thoughts.

If you have been doing regular updates to your system, you already have 2009.2. This is just an "update" release - it's 2009.1 plus all the updates that were available at the time it was published. Its purpose is to allow new installers to get the most recent stuff, without having to download hundreds of megabytes of updates after install.

My understanding is that a team of volunteers over at MyPCLinuxOS.com will be trying to make these isos available on a quarterly basis.

Hi, found you on google looking for an update to pclinux minime 2008, trying your instructions now hope it goes ok, thanks for this information, as a newby I am becoming a very big fan of PCLinuxos, its hardware support and user friendlyness seems so much better than others I have briefly tried, including Ubuntu recently, but as a newby was unable to get my wireless card working for the internet, I removed Ubuntu and put in good old PCLinux and its all go.
I was looking for info on how to update and make a remaster thats installable from a livecd without installing to hdd, sure I saw it somewhere but just can't find it anymore. Don't know if you could help on that point, or any other helpful knowledgeable people here?
